It’s always so much fun getting out the Christmas decorations…reminiscing over previous years and having a good ol’ laugh at trying to attach the wonky angel, your then 6-year-old made, to the top of the tree!

But who on earth enjoys taking them down and packing them all away? It’s always such a mad squeeze to get it all tucked away neatly. No wonder the snowmen’s noses often come out a little crooked and the odd bauble is often crushed at the bottom of a box. Everything is so squished, you wonder how you’ll ever get the suitcases out when you go away at Easter!

Christmas decoration storage

There are numerous storage bags and boxes on offer aimed at storing Christmas decorations. Those wrapping paper storage bags look super useful. I always think to myself – I’ll get a few of them, they’ll be handy. But then Christmas shopping takes priority and come January, I make do with what I’ve got after spending way too much on Christmas as it is!

However, there are some really useful household bits that you probably already have lying around the house, that can help turn your Christmas decoration jumbled mess into Christmas decoration delight. Trust me…December-you, will thank January-you!

How to organise your Christmas decorations

  • Use resealable freezer bags to sort ornaments and baubles. This way you can sort by colour and ornament for easy unpacking next year!
  • For fragile decorations use egg carton boxes, they are perfect for keeping baubles snug and safe. Leftover plastic cups lined with tissue are a good option for any fragile ornament with a slightly odd shape.
  • Wrap lights around cardboard to avoid a tangled mess. We always have loads of boxes after unwrapping all those pressies. Tear off the flaps and use these to wrap your lights around.
  • Wrap Christmas bead garland around the inner cardboard tube of kitchen roll. Make a tiny slit at the end of the tube to secure the beading to prevent it coming unravelled. Another good option is to store them in empty water bottles.
  • Use a clothes hanger to store wreaths. Slip the wreath over the hanger and wrap it in plastic. If you have space, hang it in your wardrobe, or if not, consider investing in a hanging rail that you can pop up in the loft or in the garage. You could also hang larger garlands from this.
  • Use a garment bag to store any leftover wrapping paper. This can also be hung with the wreath and garland on the hanging rail.
  • If you have an artificial tree, instead of dismantling it, wrap it tightly in cling film. This will protect it when you store it away and will also avoid losing any pieces. Next year simply slice the cling film, fluff the branches et voila!

Where is the best place to store Christmas decorations…

Now that everything is neatly organised, it may be an idea to condense all the smaller items such as baubles and ornaments into labelled boxes. Use leftover ones from Christmas packaging or if you haven’t already got some, I would recommend buying some clear plastic boxes like the ones we sell. These do tend to last forever and are perfect for stacking which will save on space. If you do decide to invest in a hanging rail, buy one with shelves, perfect for stacking boxes and keeping everything together neat and tidy all in one place.

And, if you are really fed up with the decorations taking up too much space at home and also have an abundance of outdoor decorations to store as well, why not hire one of our units. Our units come in a range of different sizes from having extra cupboard space, where you can pop the hanging rail and boxes, to having a whole extra double garage that can also fit the snowmen and Santa’s sleigh in. They are secure, dry and easily accessible. Hire upfront for 12 months and you will save 25% off the monthly rate, perfect for when you need them next year. You’ll also be able to fit those holiday suitcases in!
